Course Descriptions
Amercian Ballroom & Latin (Fall 2008) - Students learn or enhance their current skills in the American ballroom and Latin dance styles such as, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha cha, Mambo, Swing, Merengue, Salsa and Samba. Many of the dances are interrelated and you might surprise yourself at how fast you learn something so easy and fun! At level three students improve their technique, focusing on more complex patterns. Partner welcome but not required.
Ballet - Learn the techniques of classical
ballet based on the Russian Vaganova style through barre exercises, adagio,
progressions, and floor barre for core strengthening. Ballet Variations - Prior ballet experience required. Each lesson will be focused around learning ballet variations from well-known classical repertoire. This class helps students develop a stage presence, practice learning and retaining choreography, and provide a means to express themselves using the movements they learn from technique class. Breakdancing - (Workshop Only) An exciting element of hip hop, breakdancing expands your dance vocabulary by taking it to the floor. Get a workout while learning moves like the six-step, backspin, freezes, and many more! This class will include stretching, strengthening, breakdancing progressions, and basic choreography. All skill levels are welcome!
Conditioning for Dancers -
(Knowledge of dance terminology required and previous dance experience
preferred.) This challenging class is designed for a full body workout focusing
on the stretching, toning and strengthening the various muscle groups. Pilates
based exercises, floor barre and classical ballet based center movements for
toning work included. An excellent workout for both the pre-professional dancer
and the dancer looking for personal growth.
Contemporary Jazz w/ Hip Hop III+ - This
unique fusion class begins with an extensive 45 minute warm-up to create focus,
mobility, and centering for the dancer. It then combines highly quirky and
emotional energy in choreography, which simultaneously requires skillful
technique to portray the feeling of the lyrics/song genre. The class
choreography will change drastically, week to week, providing the dancer with
stylistic range, an understanding of performance connection/quality and
technical jazz, ballet and even hip-hop style skills.
Contemporary Lyrical - A style derived from jazz, combining elements and technique from jazz and ballet with a focus on expression and fluidity. Flexibility, balance and grace are emphasized in this class. Course includes warm-ups/stretching, progressions and choreography. Students should have a preliminary background or basic foundation in ballet, jazz or modern.
Exploring Dance - (Summer program)
Jump into summer with a fun filled class exploring the dance art forms of
ballet, tap and jazz! Students learn terminology, technique and movements for
each style, read exciting dance stories and experience a full genre of music
from classical ballet, hip hop, and song and dance! All music is age
appropriate!
Exploring Dance I (Fall 2008) -
Students must be 3 years of age by August 1, 2008. Designed for the young dancer, this class develops gross motor skills, coordination, and movement imagination to boys and girls while introducing basic ballet skills and beginning barre exercises.
Hawaiian Dance - Hula comes from the heart and soul of the Hawaiian people. Although it began as a form of worship during religious ceremonies, it gradually evolved into a form of entertainment. Come learn the "aloha spirit" and how movements in hula have specific meaning. Other Polynesian dance forms may also be explored at an introductory level.
Hip Hop - An upbeat and structured class that
familiarizes the participant with hip-hop style dance. The class builds weekly
on the dancer's skill through warm-ups, toning, stretching, exciting
choreography and the freedom to freestyle. Learn old school moves (moonwalk,
etc.), new school moves (c-walk, heel-toe, etc.), and other popular movements
each week to build your hip-hop repertoire. Classes are offered for beginners
through intermediate level dancers.
Hip Hop Jazz & Tap Combination - Hip Hop Jazz combination classes feature the structure and technique of classical jazz along with the exciting, fresh hip hop choreography. Students also learn tap technique, progressions and routines.
International Ballroom (Quickstep and Samba Summer Program) - Experience the styles of quickstep and samba at an introductory level. Partner welcome but not required. Quickstep is a dynamic dance with many movements including hops, runs, and quick steps. The tempo of Quickstep dance is brisk as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music! Also covered is ballroom Samba which is danced to music in 2/4 or 4/4 time. The basic movements are counted either 1-2 or 1-a-2, and are danced with a slight downward bouncing or dropping action.
International Ballroom and Latin: (Fall 2008) - An introduction to the dances used in international competition, and seen on shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You can Dance. Each session will teach two standard dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep) and two Latin dances (Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Pasodoble, and Jive), with a fifth dance based on student interest. Learn basic steps, partnering skills, and what makes each dance unique. Partner welcome but not required.
Jazz - Training includes jazz technique, terminology, placement, and rhythmic awareness development. Students progress through core techniques and skills from beginner to advanced levels. Stretching, toning, floor progressions, core conditioning, center work, and choreography included at each level.
Jazz Explosion IV+ - (Permission of instructor only) This challenging course is tailored to experienced dancers looking to improve their jazz technique through proper body alignment and retraining the core muscle groups. Class will include warm-up, toning, technique, progressions, and high energy combinations. This style of Jazz is focused on sharp, technically placed, dynamic movements complete with exhilarating choreography. Routines/combinations will include jazz and or lyrical styles.
Jumps/Kicks/Turns - (Summer program) This class begins with a 30 minute jazz-style warm-up to increase the dancers' flexibility and awareness. For the remainder of the class, the dancer is taught challenging jazz skills including high level jump, kick and turn combinations utilized in competitive and other high level performance dance routines. Minimum of intermediate skill level required and permission of Director/Instructor.
Modern - Utilizing the flow release technique developed out of Bartenieff, this class will consist strong technical warm-up with investigation of spiraling and other movement patterns. Connection with the floor and learning to utilize the floor to aid in transfer of weight as well as inversions will be a strong emphasis in this class.
Pre Ballet & Tap - Students must be 4 years of age by Aug 1, 2008. Students explore ballet, tap, creative movement, and song and dance concepts in a structured but fun environment by learning terminology, technique and movements appropriate for the young dancer.
Tap - Includes tap technique, terminology, placement, rhythm and good posture. Routines are developed throughout the semester.
